My latest money-saving technique is... laziness

There are tons of money-saving techniques touted around the personal finance blogosphere.  Cutting expenses, cooking at home, walking or biking instead or driving and so on.  Normally I'm right there with them and put a lot of effort into making my finances a success.  But lately I've been pretty busy and in the dog days of summer I've discovered a new money-saving technique that works like a charm - laziness.  How does laziness save you money, you ask?  I'm sure we can all think of how it can cost you money, but here are a few areas where it's saved me money recently.

I now only own black dress shoes.  Ditching brown shoes cuts my dress shoe spending in half since I only wore the black ones to the point of wearing them out anyway.  But this also means that I only have to keep track of and maintain one set of dress shoes.  I also don't have to worry about matching my shoes to my clothes - there's only one option.  Really, it's just pure laziness on my part.  And don't tell me that I can't wear black shoes with certain clothes or something.  Black and white go with everything.  They aren't even colors.  And yes, I also got rid of my brown belt.  Matching shoes and belt by default, the beauty of laziness.

We've needed a coffee maker ever since we parted ways with our previous one and became too lazy to use the french press (example of laziness costing you money in coffee out).  So we were going to buy one but I've been too lazy to go out and power shop with my SO to find exactly what we were looking for.  Nothing seemed to meet our needs when we ended up in the store so I wanted to avoid the whole thing.  But my laziness paid off, after over a month of procrastinating our neighbor was moving and wanted to get rid of a coffee maker.  Which turned out to be exactly what we needed and, drum roll, it was free.

For the ladies out there, laziness could save you money on jewelery, make up, clothes and shoes.  For the gents, you might save on beer and golfing.  Oh man, am I gender stereotyping today.  Gents if you want to save money on make up leave a comment and I'll research a post for you ;).  Ladies, if you're into beer, right on.  You're already saving money compared to over priced cocktails at bars.  And for golfers of any gender out  there, please stop.  I can take a lazy walk ending in a couple beers for much less money in a park headed to a nice bar.  I don't even need hundreds of dollars of equipment for that.

How does your laziness save you money?  Mine probably costs me more than I save, what about you?

  1. My own laziness has saved me thousands of dollars over time on the cost of a wardrobe. I'm so lazy that when I need to purchase new items, I pretty much buy the exact same outfits again and again, and who cares about matching anything! ;)

  2. laziness saves me money because it means i'm not going to leave my house to do anything, go anywhere or spend any money unless it's to go somewhere that i've already paid for (like the ymca) or to visit family. . i can't even tell you the weird food combinations i've concocted because i am down to almost nothing in the house and i'm too lazy to go food shopping.

  3. Great post. I have never thought that laziness could be a good thing but in this case it is. I think laziness saves us from eating out a lot. We can't be bothered to get dressed up to head out so we just eat at home.

  4. Little House - I'm also too lazy to go shopping. Unfortunately it means my closet has gotten a little too thin in some areas!

jana - Been there, done that, ate the weird food to prove it ;)

Miss T - It's more the schlepping to the restaurant and the wait that deters eating out for me, but whatever works, right?

  5. Laziness does save us money on dining out like you and Miss T. The thought of having to wait for our food, pay tips and tax just makes us grab something out of the freezer.

  6. Oh I love the headline on this post :)

And you're right, laziness can save money. Along the gender-stereotyped things, I suppose laziness (or at least impatience!) saves me money because I hate taking the time for things like haircuts & finding jewelry that coordinates with my clothes. So I just skip the haircuts (or sometimes whip out the scissors) and the jewelry.

  7. Good work. I think I'm going to stick with the black and brown shoes (and I have a reversible belt, so I guess there is an element of laziness there, lol) but I like the way you think.

  8. Maybe I'm lazier than all of you: I keep thinking "yup, do that too" as more lazy money-saving strategies are posted! Hopefully it means I'm frugal and saving and not that I'm a completely useless bum! ;)

  9. Is it me or are all your comments from women? Here to break the trend. Funny post and good advice. Black and white are not colors? Haha. Lucky you on the new coffee maker. For me, just vegging on the couch and watching tv saves on entertainment expenses and keeps the Mrs. out of the shopping center!

  10. Buck Inspire - Thanks for stopping by! It's true, for all that TV is bashed it is a pretty darn cheap source of entertainment especially if you have rabbit ears!

  11. I'm pretty lazy. I save on make up because I don't put make up on for work, we stay in because we're too lazy to go out on the town, I don't buy jewellery becuase I'm too lazy to change my earrings.

    haha, I'm lazy!

  13. Golf isn't even a nice walk with ridiculously expensive equipment... its a nice ride in a golf cart with ridiculously expensive equipment AND the cost of gas...

I'm totally into the pure laziness = saving money. I don't leave my house if I don't have to... lots of free entertainment here. I've also discovered lots of my neighbourhood by wandering around if I need to get out of the house!! FREE = AWESOME!

  14. I don't shop period. I don't have the time or energy.

  15. Jenny Z - I'm with you. Free = Awesome.

LAL - Sadly I'm going to have to start shopping again soon or I will literally have nothing to wear to classes unless I want to wear office attire all of the time. I don't even own a pair of jeans anymore; they bit the dust several months ago and never got replaced.

  16. I have decided that shopping online can cost you money but also save you some. If you actually need the item and you can find it cheaper online (including shipping), going online is so much easier and lazier. I can get cash back through such sites as ebates, not pay for gas and it just shows up a couple days later, makes shopping so much nicer.

  17. Frugal Student - You're right. There's a balance to be found with online shopping. I try to make sure that what we buy is something we need not just an impulse. We don't have a lot of room for anything else!

  18. Cutting down on social activities- period - will save you money. When you total up all the spending on outfits, drinks, travel, accomodation for get-togethers and what nots, it's shocking. I do a lot of social stuff on the net now which is cheaper and still lets me keep in touch with my friends.
